Sky's NOW TV service has, in almost anyone's eyes, been a significant success for the company. In a pay-TV market which reached saturation point some time ago, the ability to sell your product to a new market is a remarkable thing. NOW TV did exactly that, offering contract free access to great, exclusive pay-TV channels using your existing smart TV box, phone, tablet, Chromecast or games console. All of a sudden, those living in flats, listed buildings or student accommodation could get access to Sky's services, and begin paying the company for them in turn.
The strategy for driving adoption? Getting NOW TV on as many devices as physically possible. To do that, Sky have employed an army of developers to ensure that no stone is left unturned and no device left behind. Today, whether you own an Android, iOS, Xbox, Playstation, Chromecast, Fire TV or one of the countless other digital platforms, Sky have you covered. Unfortunately for those people who've been eagerly awaiting their new Apple TV box though, they were to find out that no NOW TV application had yet been made. Needless to say, that led to plenty of curious calls to the www.sky.com phone number.
Well, the good news is that NOW TV has finally been launched for the 2015 Apple TV box and brings with it support for the new Apple remote. The bad news, as always, is that Sky have yet to figure out how to bring 1080p streaming to their NOW TV service, instead locking it at 720p. It's an even more embarrassing omission, given that Sky are on the verge of launching a 4K TV service. Nevertheless, we make do with that we've got, and 720p NOW TV is better than no NOW TV at all.
Gidon Katz, Director of NOW TV, said: "We are pleased to be able to offer our range of flexible and great value NOW TV passes to Apple TV customers on the new box. There’s never been a better time to get stuck into gripping shows from Sky, including our brand new original drama, The Last Panthers on Sky Atlantic (12th Nov) to the return of Elementary on Sky Living (19th Nov), as well as over 250 Box Sets from Grey’s Anatomy to Hannibal right from the very first episode.”
