Sky Atlantic land 'The Affair' Rights

Sky's long term goal with Sky Atlantic has always been to get as many totally unmissable, exclusive programmes on there as possible. These have typically come from their contract with HBO, which has seen huge programmes like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, The Wire and Girls turn up on the channel. They've also sought out programming from other networks, purchasing the rights to AMC's Mad Men from under the BBC in a most notable example. With programmes like this on their books and Sky Atlantic remaining exclusive to Now TV and Sky customers only, they've found an interesting way to get people on board with the Sky brand.

Their job isn't done yet though, because the quest for great TV never stops, and so Sky have purchased the rights to the Golden Globe winning drama The Affair, which will be shown on Sky Atlantic. The announcement comes after a round of bidding which was rumoured to include the BBC, ITV and Channel Four. The deal was reached partly because of customer requests on the Sky direct number. As part of the deal, Sky will not only air the first series of this critically adored drama, but will also broadcast the recently announced second season as well.

The Affair stars Dominic West (of The Wire, Pride and On The Hour fame) and Ruth Wilson (most famous for her role in Luther). Mr West won Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series, Drama for his role in the series, and Ruth Wilson won the 2015 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Series, Drama for her role. Maura Tierney (ER) and Joshua Jackson (Fringe) also star in the programme, which boasts superb production values alongside its all star cast.

The Affair, as the title suggests, explores the emotional and psychological effects of an extramarital affair. This powerful drama is told separately through the male and female perspectives, using their individual recollections and bias to misdirect and entice the viewer closer into the mystery of the drama. Ruth Wilson portrays Alison, a young woman who, whilst waiting tables is trying to piece her life back together after a tragedy. Her husband Cole (Jackson) struggles to keep himself together, with his wife and their financially troubled family ranch on the line.

Their emotionally turbulent marriage becomes ever more complicated as Alison begins an affair with Noah (Dominic West), a New York City public school teacher and aspiring novelist who is spending the summer at his in-laws’ estate in the Hamptons. Tierney plays Helen, Noah’s college sweetheart, best friend, mother of his children, lover and wife of 17 years.

Sky are delighted with their latest acquisition, as are their customers on the phone number to Sky. In a short statement, Zai Bennett, the Director of Sky Atlantic said: “I’m delighted we have secured The Affair for Sky Atlantic. Its intricate storytelling and phenomenal acting sit perfectly on the channel, further cementing our channel’s position as the home of quality drama in the UK.”

Don Bacon says:September 3, 2012 at 10:46 pm“The real issue is hegemony, we know that. Iran has it and the US wants it. So that’s why they will go way beyond Iraq!”Don, what makes you think Iran has hy0;2egemon2≵ or even seeks it? Iran’s position has consistently been that the people of each nation should decide their own destiny, not some foreign power. “Flagrant hypocrisy” is a trait of the Western powers.
