Sky News Update: Spurs want Villa

Having been a prolific goal scorer in Spain for Zaragoza, Valencia and Barcelona, there is no doubt that David Villa is a top striker. He is Spain’s record goalscorer, having scored 56 goals in 92 games. However, with the arrival of the South American Player of the Year, Neymar, David Villa is no longer needed. Spurs seem to be favourites to sign the striker and are reportedly happy to go up to £10m to sign him.   There is understandable excitement for Spurs fans. Since they narrowly missed out on a Champions League place, perhaps fans feel that the Spanish striker could provide the vital difference needed. With Villa’s reputation and goal scoring record, there’s no surprise that the spurs fans are excited.   Amidst the excitement there are likely to be realists amongst the supporters that say Villa is past his best. The striker is 31 and turning 32 in December, which shows that he would only be a short-term solution rather than a foundation to build on in the long-term. Some may also argue that David Villa has never fully recovered after breaking his tibia in a match against Yokohoma in December 2011, which ruled him out of action for 8 months. Despite Barcelona’s success, Villa didn’t play a huge role. Although he made 28 La Liga appearances, only 17 of them were starts and he managed only 10 goals. This isn’t bad, but with a team behind. And in the Champions League he managed only 1 goal in 10 appearances.   Villa’s form for Spain has been much worse than for club. The striker has made 25 appearances since March 2011 but has scored only 10 goals out of the 70 Spain have scored. Whilst this is not a bad record, these 10 goals have been scored against sides such as Tahiti, Panama, Scotland etc. On the other hand, he has scored no goals in games against teams such as Italy, France and Brazil. Given Andre Villas-Boas intent on operating a 4-3-3 formation, David Villa’s ability to play down the middle as well as out wide make him a valuable addition. However, there is danger in paying a significant amount of money for a player that has peaked and is on his way down. Some people may think it is hard to justify the price tag on an older player such as David, especially since he would have to adapt to a new league and different style.
